Fighting False Allegations: A Critical Issue for Fathers in Pennsylvania

At the Dads Resource Center, we have witnessed firsthand the biases and barriers that prevent children from maintaining strong relationships with their fathers. One of the most devastating challenges is the misuse of protection from abuse (PFA) orders and false allegations reported to Child Protective Services (CPS). These legal tools, intended to protect vulnerable individuals, are too often weaponized in custody battles, harming both fathers and children.
The Alarming Statistics
Out of more than 300 fathers who have reached out to us:
- 25% (1 in 4) report facing a misused PFA order against them.
- 19% (nearly 1 in 5) report false allegations of abuse made to CPS.
These tactics create a “guilty until proven innocent” scenario, overriding existing custody orders and damaging parent-child relationships. While domestic violence prevention and child welfare services are crucial, their misuse for personal gain in custody disputes undermines their integrity and effectiveness.
