5 Facts Society Needs to Know for Children’s Awareness Month

June is Children’s Awareness Month, making it an ideal time to spotlight issues that impact families. Most people can agree that it’s essential to raise children in a way that helps reduce risks and grow up to be productive adults. The problem is that not everyone agrees on what the ideal scenario may look like. Dads’ Resource Center is on a mission to ensure that people know the vital role that fathers play in their children’s lives.

“Parenting is a two-person job,” said Dads’ Resource Center Executive Director Jeffrey Steiner. “Mothers and fathers give different, but equally important things to their children. And fathers are more engaged in parenting now than ever before.”

The Pew Research Center shared their survey findings regarding American dads. They found that 57% of dads feel that parenting is extremely important to their identity, and 63% of dads say they are not doing enough. When asked why they were not doing more, 20% reported that their children don’t live with them all of the time. Fathers not living with their children is doing more damage than people realize.

According to the Dads’ Resource Center, here are five 5 facts society needs to know:

  • Children raised in a home with their fathers achieve higher educational attainment. They are more likely to graduate from high school and college.
  • Children do better overall when raised in a house with their father. They earn more money and are less likely to use government assistance programs.
  • When children grow up in a home with their fathers, they are less likely to commit crimes. Additionally, a high percentage of those in prison grew up without their father in the house.
  • Children who grow up with their fathers in the home are less likely to smoke and use drugs.
  • When children grow up with their father in the home, they are more likely to contribute to society by voting, donating their time and money to charities.

“The active presence in the life of a child and teenager is absolutely essential for the healthy development of child,” said Dads’ Resource Center Founder and Chair Dr. Joel N. Myers. “It is also best for our society as a whole. We must do all we can to encourage, rather than discourage. both parents being actively involved in the lives of their children so that they have the best chance of becoming happy, well-adjusted, and successful in life.”

Dads’ Resource Center was started by Dr. Myers, a father of eight and the founder and CEO of AccuWeather. The mission is to help combat the issues associated with children growing up without their fathers in the home. At its heart, the center is a child advocacy organization that aims to ensure that each child has the appropriate involvement and contributions from both parents.
